Challenge and Change
DVD: $12.95
This video is an introduction to the life and work of a remarkable woman whose compassion, intelligence and fierce determination changed the way millions of people die, and live. It was created to celebrate the Hilton Humanitarian Prize honoring St. Christopher’s Hospice and its visionary founder, Dame Cicely Saunders.
St. Christopher’s was the realization of Dr. Saunders’ dream to create a better place for people at the end of life, but from the day it opened in London in 1967, it was much more than a building. It was the beginning of the modern hospice movement and a worldwide revolution in care of the dying. The program was presented to an international gathering of humanitarian organizations by the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. It emphasizes the global reach of Dr. Saunders’ contributions to medicine: hospice has taken root in over ninety countries.
In her own words, Dr. Saunders’ offers insights into the many dimensions of pain and the core principles of a new medical specialty, palliative care, which aims to alleviate suffering at every stage of life.
Tellens is currently developing a feature-length documentary on this remarkable woman.
